Algiers

Algiers - description of the city:

"La Blanche" (white) and "El-Behdja" (cheerful) - under these two names the capital of Algeria, Algiers (Alger), is known for the western and eastern world. Multimillion, but surprisingly light, cozy and peaceful Algiers is a megalopolis carefully looking after its appearance, and the second largest city in North Africa. The abundance of expensive cars is rather nicely combined with mysticism of labyrinths of the old city; the ancient ruins are washed by caressing waves of the Mediterranean Sea; and from the south comes the hot breath of the Sahara.

Entertainment, excursions and places of interest in Algiers:

Architectural monuments are concentrated mostly in the old city. Among the notable buildings are three historical mosques – Djama’a al-Kebir (Great Mosque), the oldest in the city; Djama’a al-Djedid (New Mosque), built in the 17th century under the Ottoman rule; and the Djama’a Kechaua erected under Dey Hassan in the late 18th century.

The places of interest of the modern city include Monument to the fallen (in memory of the Algerians’ liberation struggle for their independence) and the Central post office in a traditional Arabic style.

We recommend to visit the wonderful museums of the city: the Museum of National Heritage Bardot (Musée du Bardo), situated in a beautiful palace of the Ottoman era and telling about the history of the country from the sites of the first people to its independence; the Historical Museum (Musée National des Antiquités), the Museum of Popular Arts and Crafts (Musée National des Arts Traditionnels et Populaires) and the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux Arts).

You can take a stroll in d'Esse Garden (Jardin d'Essai), and a swim on the nearby beaches of Zerald and Sidi Ferrush.

At the distance of 68 km from the capital city are the ruins of the Phoenician and later Roman city of Tipaza with the majestic mausoleum of the kings of Mauritania.
