Ankara

Ankara - description of the city:

Ankara is the capital of Turkey. The city was founded in the 7th century B.C., at different times was known as Ancyra or Angora. In ancient times, it was the main city of the Roman province of Galatia, occupying the central part of Asia Minor. Later, the city went into decline, and in the early 20th century, had only 30 thousand inhabitants. But after World War II it had another greatness. Ankara became the place of the Grand National Assembly and Government of Turkey in 1920, as well as the capital - in 1923.

Currently, the capital is home to 2.8 million people; there are engineering, food-processing, wool, leather, wood industries and universities. The main architectural monuments consist of the Fortress Ankara, the Haci Bayram Mosque (12th century), the Alaeddin Mosque (12th century), and the Mausoleum of Ataturk (mid 20th century). Among museums, the most interesting is the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, where the monuments of the Hittite and Phrygian culture are shown. During the excavation of ancient Ancyra was discovered a bilingual text of the autobiography of the Emperor Augustus, known as Ancyra monument. Not very far from Ankara, hugging the hill Bogazkale, archaeologists discovered the remains of the ancient city of Hattusa, the capital of the Hittite kingdom, the state that existed in Asia Minor in 18-12th centuries B.C. and that was a former political rival of the ancient Egypt.
