Bremen

Bremen - description of the city:

Bremen is located in the northwest area of Germany. The city is an industrial and commercial city that has a major port located on the River Weser. It is located about 37 miles south of the mouth of the Weser on the North Sea. Bremerhaven is located directly on the mouth and the 2 cities make up the state Freie Hansestadt Bremen.

The city is a part of the Bremen and Oldenburg metropolitan region that consists of about 2.4 million people. It is the 2nd most populated city in the northern part of Germany and is the 10th largest city in all of Germany.

Many of the sites in Bremen are in Old Town or Altstadt. This is an oval shaped area that is surrounded by the Weser River of the southwestern side as well as the Wallgraben. On the northeastern side the former moats that surrounded the medieval city walls border the area. The Marktplatz, which is on the southeastern side of the city, is the oldest area of the city, which ends at Schnoor quarter.

The market place of the city is dominated by the Town Hall. The building was created in the Gothic style between the years 1405 and 1410. However, the façade was built in 1609 through 1612 and has a renaissance style. There are 2 statues that stand on the west side of the building. One of the statues is the Bremen Roland who is the protector of the city. He bears the sword of justice and holds a shield that has an imperial eagle. The other statue is the bronze sculpture by Gerhard Marcks and portrays the rooster, cat, dog, and donkey, from the Grimm’s fairy tale. These animals are often referred to as the town’s musicians.

Some of the other interesting buildings include the Schutting, Rathscafe, Haus der Stadtsparkasse, Raths-Apotheke, and Stadtwaage.

Tourist Attractions

Schnoor Viertel

Schnoor Viertel is the #1 attraction in Bremen. It is a small neighborhood in the medieval city centre of Bremen, and it is the only part of the city that has preserved its medieval character. The neighborhood’s name is due to the old handicrafts that were related to shipping. The alleys in between the homes were typically related to objects or occupations: There was an area in which cables and ropes were made and another area where anchor chains and wire cables were made.

The oldest houses in the neighborhood date all the way back to the 15th century. During World War II, the Schnoor suffered only minor damage.

Schnoor is a truly beautiful neighborhood, with lots of little coffee shops and small stores. The small shops, architecture, the small houses, and the narrow streets all give off the impression that the neighborhood is straight out of the Middle Ages, and it certainly is! There are some really stunning old buildings there, and you could spend an entire day just wandering around the area. Be sure to take your smartphone or a digital camera, because there are very few places like this in the world today.
