Gweru

Gweru - description of the city:

In the center of Zimbabwe is Gweru sity. It is located on the lands of the Midlands Province, as its economic and administrative center with developed industry. Most of the residents are involved in enterprises which are designed to produce leather shoes, building materials, the major share of which occupies a cement, chrome alloys, and meat processing. In the suburbs are several agricultural farms for the breeding of livestock. In addition, large areas in the vicinity of Gweru occupied by plantations of grapes, which are giving abundant harvests.

The city covers an area on the part of the territory of a geological fault, which is called the Great Dyke. The history of Gweru began in the late 19th century. It was founded in 1894 by Linder Starr Jameson, it was originally called Gwelo. The first bank in one of city`s streets was opened in 1896th, and two years later was opened the stock exchange also. During the period of colonization the local white and black populations were living in different areas. The modern name Gweru received in 1982th year after the country`s independence. The sights of the city include the Museum of gold with interesting exhibits that attract the attention of visitors Gweru.

Gweru is a typical colonial city, where are many buildings built in the colonial style, including such monuments as the Midlands hotels and Chitukuko hotels. Spending vacation in Gweru, can be noticed that the city is divided into several blocks that are clearly different from each other in terms of life. It comes from the division of segregation time when black population were forcibly separated from the white population: there were «black» schools, colleges, and neighborhoods.

Today, Gweru is not only an industrial center, but it also takes tourist, for whom there was built a few good hotels. All modern tours in Zimbabwe include visiting such big towns as Gweru and give representation about the real life of the country.
