Moroni

Moroni - description of the city:

Moroni town is one of the main towns of the Comoros. Since 1962th it is capital of the country, and since 1947th-the capital of the French possession). The city`s original name, Port-au-Botre, can be translated from the local dialect as «The Fire», that fairy accurate shows the location of the city at the base of ever breathing a huge heat Karthala volcano.

The city is quite young- human settlements existed at this place at least from the XIII century AD, but current status Moroni received only at the beginning of the XX century. The city itself is more like some Mediterranean port, with the same stone breakwaters and crowed clusters of houses with tiled roofs, protruding from the green orchards. The harbor is framed by numerous stone piers and boats, which run parallel to the lines of almost 6km/ City`s planning as if specially designed to give greater access to the sun in the courtyards of houses, framed by thickets of oranges and other fruit trees.

The city`s architecture is in self can guarantee a visit to the Comorоs by thousand of tourists. In the old Arab quarter, or medina origin population of Comoros shows itself by local numerous galleries, balustrades, beautifully carved wooden door grilles and shutters. Trough all the old part of the city are winds a network such as the old and narrow streets, and obviously inherited the traditions of Arab architecture. Another indication of this is the many old mosques, the most colorful of which is considered Vendreri Mosque, from the top of which can be seen almost the entire city and surrounding areas of the island.

Many hotels and bungalows with restaurants and cafes are disposed north of the city, but, unfortunately, only a couple of cafes in Moroni have views of the harbor, which depressed many tourists. From the city are lots of routes that lead through lush tropical forest to the top of the Karthala volcano, to the beautiful waterfalls and the beautiful deserted beaches of the capital neighborhoods. Active guests can climb to the top of Kartala and even descend into the crater of an active volcano, which is one of the largest active craters in the world.
