Praia

Praia - description of the city:

Praia is the capital of Cape Verde, as well as the biggest town. In Portuguesе, the city’s name means ‘beach’ and it’s set near the ocean. Praia is where ships from the outside come in also. Since it is the biggest city in the nation, it has a center of business, and incoming boats supply the it with many needed goods.

The topography of the city is made up of high and low points interspersed in the area. Previously, it was a place of overall chaos and massive integration of close by areas, but after the country gained self-rule, it became a more urban and organized area, which we can see today. Neighbourhoods merged together to make the layout that is currently in place. There is an international airport, a harbor for ships to make entry, and a decent infrastructure of roads crossing the city area.

Praia has a medium desert-like weather, with a long time of dry weather, with short periods bringing rains every now and then. But overall, the city doesn’t get much rain. The average temperature of about 19 degrees centigrade can almost make it similar to areas in the tropics, but lack of rain makes it unable to fit that full description. It rarely gets very hot, neither does it get too cold in this arid climate.

The center of the city is elevated, making it possible to get a fairly good view of the city from it. There are a few areas of interest in this city. The Albuquerquе Square, made close to 1920 is one of these. Others are the living space of the old colonial president and a monument erected to commemorate the explorer who found the island years ago. There is also a museum of ethnography. Some buildings and constructions here are very old, originating in the 1800’s
