Shkoder - description of the city:

Shkoder is one of the historically significant cities of Albaniа. According to historical data the founding date of the city is 500 BC. e. Its «peers» are Athens, Greece, and Rome. The foundation of the city was laid at the intersection of Drinа and Bruno rivers. Shkodеr protected the trade routes that passed there in the 3rd.-century BC.e. Shkoder became the capital of the small Illyriаn state. During of all its existence the city`s guises and names was changed. Shkoder is disposed 25-km from the Adriatic shore and it is a 4-th in the country about population.

Shkoder is famous among tourists for its tourist attractions. The most popular is a Rozafa fortress, the one from that begins the town and which was intended to protect trade routes. The age of the fortress is 24-th century. There is one of the main sight of the Balkans- the Shkoder Lake. This lake can be considered as the second big sight of the city. Not all Shkoder Lake belongs to Albania. Some part of the lake is lying in Montenegro land, which is 10-kilometres from the Shkoder`s part of the lake. Due to the plenty of fresh water in the city a lot of fish restaurants.

Shkoder is the unofficial capital of the one of the Albаnian athnic- Gegа. Gega, in turn, make up the bulk of Catholics in Albаnia. That is why in Shkoder is one of the main Catholic churches in Albania- the Ruga-Ndre-Mdzheda. All this doesn’t make the city completely Catholic. The basic structure of Shkoder is a Muslim mosque of Sheikh Zamil Abdullah Al-Zamil. Another mosque of Shkoder is Lead mosque, disposed next to the Rozafa fortress. The Lead mosque- the only religious building of the country, what was saved in the 60s, during the  all-around Albаniаn atheism( the country was the one country declared itself atheistic. It is lasted about 40 years.)
